The Flamingo Room opens off Commercial Drive through a corridor designed to feel like stepping into a warm Miami night – saturated colours, layered textures, gold flamingo motifs, and lighting adjusted throughout the night to match the mood of the music. The space sits within a historic building on one of Vancouver’s most characterful streets, and the design works with the architecture rather than against it, preserving original features while injecting something vivid and deliberate. Tabletops repurposed from another restaurant sit alongside custom millwork, brass details, and lush foliage.

The bar is LGBTQIA+ managed and draws directly from the ethos of its sister restaurant Havana next door, a philosophy that shapes the culture of the room as much as it does the scheduling. Commercial Drive has a long history of queer culture and arts, and the Flamingo Room sits consciously within that tradition, collaborating with nearby venues such as the Rio Theatre and hosting events tied to Pride, International Women’s Day, and local community moments.

Live music fills most evenings, exclusively featuring local and emerging Vancouver artists. Jazz, soul, funk, acoustic, and rotating special performances make up the schedule, with DJ sets and pop-ups filling out the calendar further. The room is arranged so that every seat holds a sightline to the stage, and sound levels are managed carefully – earlier sets allowing for conversation, later ones leaning into something more immersive. It is a lineup that keeps the bar genuinely embedded in Vancouver’s creative community.

The drinks list is rum-forward, with Havana Club as the primary partner, and takes its aesthetic cues from the room – bold flavours, tropical influences, and vibrant presentation. The menu changes twice a year for the core list and twice for a separate seasonal selection, developed through team-wide ideation sessions and R&D trials. House-made syrups, shrubs, clarified juices, and garnishes are produced in-house, with smoking and occasional fat-washing used where suited to the drink. Guests who want something outside the menu can build a drink through a bartender’s choice format, guiding the team by spirit and flavour profile. At the end of the visit, each guest receives a signature postcard featuring the bar’s artwork – a small and considered close to the evening.
