ENVIRONMENTAL ENDEAVOURS

Lots of small actions at Service Bar adds up to a venue that makes a serious effort to reduce waste. Seasonal ingredients are repurposed, or where they can’t be – composted. Eco-friendly materials, such as reclaimed wood, were prioritised in design and the venue fosters strong relationships with local suppliers.

DETAILS OF NOTE

Service Bar support a number of local initiatives. Proudly, they are beverage partners of Chefs for Equality, an event to advance the fight for LGBTQ+ equality through the work of the HRC Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization.

Service Bar is the kind of neighbourhood spot that makes you feel like a regular from your first visit. It was built on the idea that great cocktails can match an unbuttoned atmosphere – where a world-class drink sits comfortably next to some of the best fried chicken in town.

Inspired by a mix of dive bars, Irish pubs, and contemporary cocktail spaces, the space maintains a familiar, lived-in feel. Local artists contribute to the design via murals and a rotating chalkboard showcase new artwork each month. Guests looking for a more secluded drinking experience can head to the hidden snug, modeled after Irish pub booths, with a dedicated bartender window.

The bar’s name says everything visitors can expect: service comes first. While the cocktail program is up there as one of the more exciting in D.C., the goal is always to be a neighbourhood bar first. Bartenders are just as happy to mix an old favourite as they are to guide guests through the ever-changing cocktail list. A Happy Hour, from 5-7pm weekdays, keeps drinks affordable and the atmosphere lively. Regulars will note that the music is often synced with artists performing at the nearby concert venues, a smart touch from a team who knows their area well.

Balancing creativity with accessibility, the cocktail menu is divided into three sections: the featured menu, which showcases the bar’s newest innovations; the happy hour menu, featuring well-priced classics; and the categorical menu, sorting drinks from light and refreshing to bold and spirit-forward. Service Bar adapts its offerings continuously, swapping in seasonal ingredients rather than rigidly overhauling the menu. New drinks first appear on the featured menu, where they can be refined based on guest feedback before earning a permanent spot.

Behind each drink is a lengthy process —the team has recorded over 500 unique recipes since opening, often revisiting past favourites to refine them with modern techniques. Menu planning meetings allow team members—especially junior staff—to develop ideas, working collaboratively with ownership to bring concepts to life. Before a drink makes the menu, it must be carefully tested, written out in detail, and approved by leadership.

It’s in the details that the process really shows, every garnish here is designed to enhance the drink while minimising waste, repurposing byproducts over raw ingredients whenever possible. Ice selection is key, with different types tailored to optimise dilution and texture. While space constraints limit large-scale ice programs, the team creatively integrates liquid nitrogen, centrifuges, and advanced clarification techniques into the menu.

Beyond drinks, Service Bar’s kitchen is a standout. The menu leans into classic American comfort food made with high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. The fried chicken, a signature offering, has earned a loyal following and remains a constant, even as other dishes evolve.

Service Bar’s impact extends beyond its walls. The team is deeply engaged with the local community, supporting nearby farmers, partnering with regional beverage producers, and showcasing D.C.-based artists. More than just a bar, it’s a place where great drinks, great food, and great company come together—where hospitality is always at the heart of the experience.

“Immaculate vibes! High energy, warm welcomes, a playful dynamic between the team - all with perfectly executed steps of service. This is what a bar should feel like!”
